How do headphones amplify sound(how do they work)?

I have a science project on how headphones cause acoustic trauma when up to loud and how they cause you to go deaf but I need to know how it all works. So how do headphones work and I also need to know how speakers amplify as well.

The quick answer is that the electric current that travels through the speaker wires is converted into sound waves via the speaker cone (the round part of the speaker that pulsates. If the speaker cone did not pulsate, there would be no sound. (As all sound is caused by the vibration of air molecules)
Your ears operate on the opposite principle; air molecules introduce sound waves to you eardrum, which sends those waves ultimately to your brain which decodes the information as sound. Too many decibels can permanently hurt the workings of you inner ear. (Simply place. The process really goes through some other steps that time will not permit me to clarify) but . . . .

Here’s the site you want to check out: www.howstuffworks.com . It’s a really cool site that’ll tell you pretty much everything you want to know about stuff. (Earphones have speakers in them, so you might want to type in "speakers" for a search term) And you can also look up how ears work too!

Hope this helps.
