When it comes to being creative, we first reckon of letting go of limitations, restrictions and all those logical, analytical activities of the brain’s left hemisphere. Delving into the limitless world of our imaginative right brain is an vital part of entering that exhilarating state where new thoughts flow. But that alone doesn’t achieve the balance we need for creative harmony.

The last few months have been hectic as I’ve set up a new business – as a single parent, this isn’t always a breeze. Apart from making my own brand of training courses and seminars, we’ve built a lovely website containing many articles on holistic wellbeing. Even though this is the work that I’m passionate about and like to do, not everything runs smoothly all the time. Retaining the ‘creative flow’ is a must.

I’m sure many of you will know the feeling of ‘life getting in the way’ – too many errands to run, bills to pay, autumn leaves to rake and complicated homework riddles to solve – and the list goes on… So, how DO you retain the creative flow?

The answer is simple really – through mind control!

The thought of mind control might seem opposed to having boundless creative energy, but it isn’t at all.

Being creative means letting go – ‘going with the flow’ as that well worn saying goes. It’s about allowing the delicate breeze of inspiration, imagination and thoughts to tickle your fingers into a dance of many letters as the words flow onto paper (or into your PC files). And in order to let go enough for this subtle, elusive energy to come out to play, you first need mind control.

The mind control path to creativity means being able to leave behind the noise of incessant mental chatter, the harrowing images of ever growing un-ironed washing piles, the frantic pre-Christmas shopping shuffle and whatever else might be occupying your thoughts and undermining your creativity.

Take time out in the midst of the madness. Let go of the pressure of the to-do-list and the need for household perfection – and the guilt that may result from that – and take time for silence, for nature and for simply being with your Self. Once you learn to control your mind, you achieve the inner silence that allows something ‘sublime’ to happen.

Try my top three tips to quieten the mind and increase creativity:

#1 Find five minutes for yourself as early in the day as possible. Lock yourself away. Make it your time. If necessary buy some noise cancelling headphones! Sit in a comfortable chair, close your eyes, and relax. Imagine you are breathing in creative energy with each breath, and exhaling pure light.

#2 Walk. Become super-sensitive to what’s around you – bird song, traffic noise, laughter. Don’t analyse or judge, just look, listen and use the rest of your senses.

#3 Play this creativity game. Pick up the nearest book. Go to page 12. Count to the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth words. I just did this and the words were “order to achieve”. Pick, one two or three of these words, and use them to write about tomorrow. Don’t analyse, just write.

“Tomorrow I’m going to order an omelette at the shoe repair shop. It would be excellent to see the look on the face of ancient Jenkins. Maybe he’ll even crack a smile for once. You never know what you can achieve until you try.”

And then, delight in going with that creative flow! Have fun…

I have been on many long haul flights in my lifetime, and have a number of things I usually do, in order to make my trip as enjoyable as I possibly can.

The very first thing I do when boarding a plane for a long haul flight is usually to take off my shoes. Personally, I feel a fantastic sense of relief once i take my shoes off, as I can stretch my toes, get the circulation flowing properly again, and it is just a fantastic feeling.

Talking about getting the circulation going, it is also crucial for you to stretch your legs. I do this by going on a walk down the isle every few hours. Obviously, you don’t want to keep on walking past people, as there attempting to sleep, but this really can’t be helped. The body is mostly comprised of water, and if you don’t get enough you’ll feel terrible, and even worse could end up in a life threatening condition. Not just water, but it’s smart to also bring some snacks aboard the plane too. I’m not a fan of plane food, so I’ll aim to bring on healthy foods for myself to eat when possible. Normally, I’ll bring a large pack of cashew nuts, as I really like the taste, and they normally fill me up and keep me going for long lengths of time. Sandwiches are a excellent suggestion, as are biscuits, although there obviously not too healthy, dependant upon the type.

Yet another thing helping to make the time glide is to bring along some type of entertainment. No one wants to be on a plane twiddling their thumbs for a 8 hour journey. Hopefully, if you’re lucky, your flight may have a movie featured, either with a screen on the back of the chair in-front of you, or on the movie wall. If not, and if finances permit, bring your own film, which you’ll have the ability to watch on your phone or personal media player. If films aren’t your thing, listen to music. Personally, I get tired of playing music before too long, so I’ll take along some comedy mp3s which never get dull. People around me may reckon there is a weirdo near them with me laughing every minute, but at least I’m enjoying my trip, and I’ll try not to laugh too loud.

If you lack the ways to watch a film or hear mp3′s, why don’t you carry a magazine, newspaper or book. I’m a huge fan of reading, so I’ll bring a myriad of literature which I’ve got especially for this reason.

Even the best of us can struggle to entertain ourselves for lengths at a time, so another option is to simply catch up on some rest, and fall asleep. To allow yourself maximum comfort, buy a neck support pillow. For people with distress sleeping a result of the noise made by others around you, buy an eye mask to close out the light, and buy some noise cancelling headphones which will help out with minimizing the noise pollution near you. Who would have thought you could be this comfortable on a plane?

There are several things that you can do to help yourself.  Most just take a small plotting and forethought because once you are on the plane, it is nearly too late to implement these things.  These small secrets will make a huge difference in your ability to sleep on the airplane, and will make for a much more pleasant experience.

Window Seats

When making reservations, make sure you reserve a window seat.  This gives you a nice wall to lean against, and provides you with a small more privacy.  After all, it is much more comfortable to lean against the wall, than wake up and find you are napping on the shoulder of a weirder.

Neck Pillows

At first glance it may seem a bit corny, but neck pillows are a wonderful thought.  Airplane seats are not designed for comfortable sleep.  Having your head bob up and down as you drift off does not make for excellent rest.  Nearly any airport shop sells neck pillows.  They are not expensive, grab one.  It will be a fantastic investment.

A Excellent Meal

Get yourself a excellent meal a few hours before take off.  It is much simpler to sleep on a full stomach and you won’t need to eat any of those airline snacks.  Hopefully, while everyone else is munching on those wonderful pretzels, you will be comfortably dreaming.

Avoid Caffeine

Stay away from caffeine for obvious reasons.  You are plotting to sleep, so don’t counter that by putting a stimulant into your system.  Remember that caffeine not only comes in coffee, but in most soft drinks as well.  If you are thirsty drink water, it is the best choice as it hydrates you (which is vital on flights).  Colas really act as a diuretic which causes you to make more frequent trips to the bathroom, and dehydrates your body (causing headaches, jet lag, muscle cramps, etc.).

Sensory Blockers

Two essential items for sleeping on an airplane are eye masks and noise cancelling headphones.  Even on nighttime flights, you can count on someone sitting next to you that keeps the light on to read, talks to someone across the aisle the whole flight, or worse – engages you in conversation about world politics, their award winning rose, or their newest grandchild.  Eye masks block out the light, and noise cancelling earphones do a wonderful job of providing you with astonishing silent.  Besides, it sends a fantastic message to the person next to you that you are to be left to your sleep.

After Gizmodo prematurely leaked the images of a “lost” prototype on the internet, the buzz surrounding the 4G has only escalated. Meanwhile, the popularity of HTC’s Droid Incredible has made fierce competition with a device that has not even been released yet – which is pretty remarkable, though whether that’s bodes better for the iPhone or the Incredible we’re not quite sure.

The improvements made in both device model upgrades (Droid and iPhone) is immensely comparable, revealing that both camps are keenly plugged in to what their customers want.

For one, the HTC  Droid and the iPhone both have upgraded their camera features. The 4G iPhone now includes a 2 megapixel front-facing camera for chat, and has added a long-awaited flash to its regular camera on the rear of the device, now a more acceptable 5 megapixels replacing its ancient, tired 3MP. The Droid, on the other hand, boasts an 8 megapixel camera, auto focus, and a dual LED flash, which seems to give HTC the upper hand over even the 4G iPhone on this feature. But the iPhone 4G has also added a tap to focus feature that enables the camera to focus more accurately.  

Apple has also added a second microphone for better voice clarity by canceling surrounding noise (much like noise canceling headphones do). HTC has no such feature.

Both the iPhone and the Droid have improved the resolution and the overall show screen. The Droid’s 3.7 inch LED screen and a 1 GHz processor is quicker than its predecessor.  But the iPhone 4G will be offering a startling 960×640 pixels, and a oleophobic fingerprint resistant coating.

The quicker processor on the Droid makes it a most valuable player in gaming and gaming developments.

The iPhone, as always, comes in choice of 2 models, one with 16 GB, and one with 32 GB. And while the Droid offers close to 10,000 apps, the iPhone offers at least that many.

1. Finding your silent space.  

Find a way to make white noise to block out the noises around you.  If you have access to a white noise machine or fan, turn that on to provide a constant noise to block what is going on around you.  
If that is not available, go to SimplyNoise to play a white noise loop or download a file.  If you would rather have an application, download Noisy for Macintosh.
If you don’t have access to the internet, look around your house for noise canceling headphones, earplugs, or a towel to wrap around your head.  If necessary, even plug your ears like a small kid.  Anything to get peace and silent for meditation.

2.  Sitting yourself down

Figure out the position you want to be for meditation.  Some people like lying down, others like sitting on a chair.  If you are lying down, DO NOT lie on your bed.  I did that once and fell asleep for two hours.  Lie on carpet or hard ground to ensure that you are relaxed or awake.  If you are sitting up, you don’t need to be in the lotus position.  Just find somewhere where you can sit up with your back straight.  

3.  Setting the time for meditation

Now you need a way to time yourself.  You could meditate for just as long as you wanted, but I’ve found that setting a time limit for meditation is helpful.  Go find a kitchen timer, oven timer, egg timer, watch timer, cell phone timer, or iPod timer.  If none of those are available, you can go to Online Stopwatch and use their fullscreen countdown timer.
If this is your first time meditating, set it for a small time – 3-5 minutes works well.  If you are more advanced, you can do more time.

4.  Starting the meditation

Set your timer for but long you want to meditate.  Now the meditation will start!  Start the meditation by taking a deep and full breath.  Pretend like you are about to dive off a boat into the ocean, to go searching on the sea-floor for pearls.  That is the kind of huge breath that you want.  Feel like you can’t breathe in any more and that you are about to burst.  Take it in nice and slowly, and exhale out slowly.
What I have found helps is breathing out of my nose for meditation.  To do this, cover one nostril.  So, for example, breathe in slowly through your right nostril for 3 to 5 seconds.  Hold that breath for a couple of seconds.  Then cover your right nostril and breathe slowly out of your left nostril. Keep doing this alternating pattern for the duration of your meditation.  This controlled breathing will help you relax.

5.  What to reckon about

Most people don’t really know meditation.  They say “unless your mind is completely clear, you fail”.  That is very hard in ANY stage of meditation . Thoughts will come into your consciousness.  I have found two effective ways of dealing with these thoughts.

6.  Dealing with thoughts in your meditation

Whenever a thought comes up, you can say in your mind “Look, thought.  I know you want to be vital.  Maybe you are really vital!  But right now, I am focusing on being cool.  If you are really all that vital, you can come back later, after I am done meditating.”
Another method I use is to let go of the thoughts. I reckon of each thought as a cloud, and when it comes to me, I don’t get caught up in the thinking.  Instead of letting the tale play out in my head, I take the thought, imagine it is a cloud, and let it float away.

Now you know some basics of meditation!  It really isn’t that hard.  Just make sure that you schedule a time during your day to do this meditation.  I find that earlier in the day, after I have showered, when I am still honestly cool (and tired) is the best time to do this.  If you want to expand on your meditation time, you can meditate right after getting up, and then right before you go to bed to relax you.
