Getting the better of Long Haul Flights

When on long haul flights, it’s vital to get yourself as comfortable as is possible, for you to have a kind, relaxing journey. No one wants to be on a plane, especially when there stressed and in a less than enjoyable position for any part of the trip.

I have been on many long haul flights in my lifetime, and have a number of things I usually do, in order to make my trip as enjoyable as I possibly can.

The very first thing I do when boarding a plane for a long haul flight is usually to take off my shoes. Personally, I feel a fantastic sense of relief once i take my shoes off, as I can stretch my toes, get the circulation flowing properly again, and it is just a fantastic feeling.

Talking about getting the circulation going, it is also crucial for you to stretch your legs. I do this by going on a walk down the isle every few hours. Obviously, you don’t want to keep on walking past people, as there attempting to sleep, but this really can’t be helped. If you need to disguise it, place yourself in a position on the plane in order that you ‘must’ have a small stroll to attend the toilets. Go to the toilets and give your legs a shake to get some life back into them again. Do this every few hours when possible. This also avoids the onset of DVT, or Deep Vain Thrombosis. On this note, should you need to venture to the toilet frequently, try not to sit in the seat closest to the window, as it will prove very frustrating to the passengers sitting closest to you should they have to get up for you every couple of minutes.

Drink sufficient fluids, obviously being careful to avoid alcohol, as this would have the opposite effect to what you want as this may cause dehydration. The body needs fluids at regular intervals. It’s incredible the number of people reckon, just cause there sitting down on a plane and not moving around too much, they don’t need to take on water. The body is mostly comprised of water, and if you don’t get enough you’ll feel terrible, and even worse could end up in a life threatening condition. Not just water, but it’s smart to also bring some snacks aboard the plane too. I’m not a fan of plane food, so I’ll aim to bring on healthy foods for myself to eat when possible. Normally, I’ll bring a large pack of cashew nuts, as I really like the taste, and they normally fill me up and keep me going for long lengths of time. Sandwiches are a excellent suggestion, as are biscuits, although there obviously not too healthy, dependant upon the type.

Yet another thing helping to make the time glide is to bring along some type of entertainment. No one wants to be on a plane twiddling their thumbs for a 8 hour journey. Hopefully, if you’re lucky, your flight may have a movie featured, either with a screen on the back of the chair in-front of you, or on the movie wall. If not, and if finances permit, bring your own film, which you’ll have the ability to watch on your phone or personal media player. If films aren’t your thing, listen to music. Personally, I get tired of playing music before too long, so I’ll take along some comedy mp3s which never get dull. People around me may reckon there is a weirdo near them with me laughing every minute, but at least I’m enjoying my trip, and I’ll try not to laugh too loud.

If you lack the ways to watch a film or hear mp3′s, why don’t you carry a magazine, newspaper or book. I’m a huge fan of reading, so I’ll bring a myriad of literature which I’ve got especially for this reason.

Even the best of us can struggle to entertain ourselves for lengths at a time, so another option is to simply catch up on some rest, and fall asleep. To allow yourself maximum comfort, buy a neck support pillow. For people with distress sleeping a result of the noise made by others around you, buy an eye mask to close out the light, and buy some noise cancelling headphones which will help out with minimizing the noise pollution near you. Who would have thought you could be this comfortable on a plane?

If a person suffers from motion sickness, it’s best if you let the steward know in advance to enable them to keep watch over you, and also so that they’ll be prepared in case you do need attention. If at all possible, it is also a excellent thought to obtain motion sickness patches or take the motion sickness pill.

Few individuals have much choice about where they sit on the plane, as there assigned a specific row on the flight, but if you kick up a huge enough fuss, and the plane isn’t completely full, you might be able to go. This can be perfect if you’ve got a crying baby in close proximity to you, not what exactly you need on a long haul flight.

Also, attempt to avoid sitting to near to the toilets as stated earlier in this article. The reason behind this is because it’s a congregation area. People will gather around the toilet whilst they wait for their turn, they may start a conversation, lean against your seat, all of which are irritating if you are attempting to relax.

Lastly, if you are sitting on the seat closest to the isle, you should keep your arms and legs away from the isle, the very last thing you need is a trolley to the kneecap like which happened to me on my last flight, ouch.

Five Secrets To Getting Better Sleep On An Airplane

Many of us have experienced the nightmare of a long flight, a full schedule upon arrival at our destination, and no ability to get any sleep on the airplane.  A full day at our destination with no rest makes for a miserable day.  Let’s face it, an airplane is not the best place to get your z’s.  These secrets will help you get better sleep and fight jet lag or even avoid jet lag.

There are several things that you can do to help yourself.  Most just take a small plotting and forethought because once you are on the plane, it is nearly too late to implement these things.  These small secrets will make a huge difference in your ability to sleep on the airplane, and will make for a much more pleasant experience.

Window Seats

When making reservations, make sure you reserve a window seat.  This gives you a nice wall to lean against, and provides you with a small more privacy.  After all, it is much more comfortable to lean against the wall, than wake up and find you are napping on the shoulder of a weirder.

Neck Pillows

At first glance it may seem a bit corny, but neck pillows are a wonderful thought.  Airplane seats are not designed for comfortable sleep.  Having your head bob up and down as you drift off does not make for excellent rest.  Nearly any airport shop sells neck pillows.  They are not expensive, grab one.  It will be a fantastic investment.

A Excellent Meal

Get yourself a excellent meal a few hours before take off.  It is much simpler to sleep on a full stomach and you won’t need to eat any of those airline snacks.  Hopefully, while everyone else is munching on those wonderful pretzels, you will be comfortably dreaming.

Avoid Caffeine

Stay away from caffeine for obvious reasons.  You are plotting to sleep, so don’t counter that by putting a stimulant into your system.  Remember that caffeine not only comes in coffee, but in most soft drinks as well.  If you are thirsty drink water, it is the best choice as it hydrates you (which is vital on flights).  Colas really act as a diuretic which causes you to make more frequent trips to the bathroom, and dehydrates your body (causing headaches, jet lag, muscle cramps, etc.).

Sensory Blockers

Two essential items for sleeping on an airplane are eye masks and noise cancelling headphones.  Even on nighttime flights, you can count on someone sitting next to you that keeps the light on to read, talks to someone across the aisle the whole flight, or worse – engages you in conversation about world politics, their award winning rose, or their newest grandchild.  Eye masks block out the light, and noise cancelling earphones do a wonderful job of providing you with astonishing silent.  Besides, it sends a fantastic message to the person next to you that you are to be left to your sleep.

These five secrets will allow you to arrive at your destination well rested, and in many cases will even help you avoid jet lag or at least fight jet lag.

Recording Tips: How to Make Better Mixes

Recording and mixing audio is truly an art form unto itself. Like playing bass, it’s the type of thing most people can pickup quickly and without much effort. Getting excellent at it can take years, but. I’ve been recording in my home studio since 1995. When I go back and listen to my early demos, I am appalled. They sound horrific. The EQ is terrible, they are overly compressed, they’re muddy, and all of the tracks blend together into a massive “wall of sound” where no single instrument stands out. But I like to reckon my current work sounds infinitely better. Take a listen to the tracks on my Demos page. I mixed these in 2006 on a shoestring budget. My entire recording “studio” cost me $500. I used budget mics, budget preamps, and budget PC audio interfaces. (One fascinating note: In the song Confession, I used a $400 mic on the words “Am I going crazy? Could you ever turn your eyes my way?” The rest of the song was recorded with a $65 microphone. To this day I can’t hear any difference in quality. )What was the secret to making better mixes? It was simple. I listened. I would listen to my mixes over, and over, and over, and then do it again. I listened to my songs on headphones, in my car, in my girlfriend’s car, on my home stereo system, on a portable CD player, etc. During every listening session I would find something that could be improved. Over time, I figured out the fundamental principles of excellent mixing. I also read plenty of industry magazines, online articles, Internet forums, and whatever else I could find that would enlighten a novice like me. In the end, I was able to produce mixes I was very pleased with. Here, then, are the largest nuggets of wisdom I wish someone had preached to me in my early days:
You don’t need expensive gear. That’s right. Despite what manufacturers and retailers may say, the secret to excellent sound is not in the equipment. Using poor recording and mixing techniques on expensive gear will still result in a terrible final product. It doesn’t matter how nice your API preamp or LA-2A compressor is. If you don’t know what you’re doing, the results will be garbage. Just like buying a custom Les Paul won’t make you sound like Jimmy Page! Once you’re able to produce excellent mixes on budget gear, you can justify a gear upgrade. A small processing goes a long way. The abundance of VST and RTAS plugins is both a blessing and a curse. We musicians now have access to an endless collection of software compressors, equalizers, limiters, enhancers, reverbs, etc. But with this power comes responsibility. Use them sparingly! I once held the opinion that because I had tons of plugins at my disposal, I needed to use all of them as much as possible. I was incorrect. Excessive plugin use can ruin a mix. These days I use very light compression and very subtle EQ adjustments, and the results sound much more natural. Make “space” for each track. Every instrument should have its own “space” in the mix. By “space” I’m referring to track identity…the things that separate each track from the others, so they can be heard properly. Reckon of this way: When you take a huge family photo, how is everyone positioned? Does everyone clump together randomly? Or does everyone organize according to height and spread out evenly? Your mixes are like musical photographs. Reckon of each track as an individual that should be noticed in some way. Track “space” can be made by using proper EQ techniques, stereo field placement, volume, compression, and reverb/delay settings. For example, bass guitar and kick drum occupy much of the same frequency range. If each is not EQ’d intelligently, they will step all over each other, and neither will be identifiable. There are tons of excellent Internet articles on this subject, so read up. I may even write one myself. Know how EQ and Compression works. You’ll be amazed at how much better your mixes will sound if you use proper EQ and Compression techniques. Each has its own set of rules, and the rules are specific for each type of instrument. For instance, electric guitar requires different EQ and Compressor settings than do vocals. Drums usually need a quick attack and quick release on the Compressor, while the opposite is right for bass. Again, there are plenty of online articles dedicated to this subject alone. Carefully evaluate the mixes of your favorite artists. Everyone has their own taste. Whatever artist(s) inspire you with their sound, pay attention to the mix. Is it heavy on bass? Are the drums super compressed? Are the vocals subdued, or way out front? Study the sound carefully and try to emulate it. I’ve spent nearly as much time listening to the sound of professional CD mixes as I have listening to my own. It’s very educational. Last, but not least: DO NOT OVERCOMPRESS YOUR MASTER. You may not be aware, but there is a current trend in the recording industry to make every CD louder than its competitors. This is known as the “loudness war” and it is getting out of hand. Using insane levels of compression destroys the dynamics (the change between silent and loud parts) of a mix. The end result is a song that stays at exactly the same level—insanely loud—the entire time. Not only does it sound unnatural, it causes listener “fatigue”. The human ear wants to hear natural changes in volume. It helps make more emotion in the listener. Your heavy and energetic chorus will have much more impact if it’s really louder than your verse!  Be a part of the solution: Use your compressor and limiter wisely during the mastering stage! Even for rock music, you probably don’t want more than 3db of compression during your mastering. That’s it for this article. I plot to write follow up articles that examine these topics, and more, in more detail. I hope this has been helpful.
Make music, Dan
