The Noise Canceling Headphone – A Brief History

There is a well-known proverb that says, ‘one man’s noise is another man’s music’; but regardless of your taste, loud noise at a close proximity is really infuriating. Fortunately, in order to shut out the loud disturbing noise of audio systems, a piece of acoustic equipment has been specially designed that is known as noise cancelling headphones. It allows you to delight in the melodious music of your choice without hampering anyone else’s privacy.

In the year 1988, Amar Bose, founder of Bose Corporation, invented the original noise canceling headphones. Once, while traveling by an airplane he was using a pair of headphones provided by the airline company to listen some music. But the growling sounds of aircraft engines prevented him from enjoying the melody. This incident really motivated him and right there, sitting inside the plane, he started scheming about a device which will help to eradicate unnecessary surrounding noise while listening to music. It paved the way to the invention of noise canceling headphones.

Noise canceling headphones are usually segregated into two categories – passive and active. Hypothetically all kinds of headphones are capable of decreasing unreceptive noise. It is purely for the reason that objects present in the headphones are themselves able to wipe out certain sound waves, particularly those with higher frequencies.

The most outstanding passive noise canceling headphones are circum-aural headphones which are specifically made to make best use of noise-filtering properties. On the other hand active type noise canceling headphones are more sophisticated compared to the passive counterparts. They not only reduce the higher frequency sound waves but also effectively wipe of the lower frequency sound waves. In reality this type of headphones produces their personal sound waves so as to imitate the inward bound noises.
