Headphone Heaven… Finding the Right Model

If you like to listen to music, there are probably times when you prefer to listen to music on your own rather than share it with the world (and admittedly, there are times when the world would prefer not to share your music with you!). When you want to keep the sound in your head, you need headphones.

Headphones come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are designed for varying levels of sound quality, convenience, and affordability.

The common headphones that you will likely use for listening to music on a portable CD player or an ipod or your phone are probably earbuds. These small, circular head phones fit right into your ears. They don’t eliminate outside noise, which makes them appropriate so you can still hear your stop on the subway or listen for oncoming traffic if you’re riding your bike. They are very lightweight and affordable. In fact, most listening devices that offer headphones with them offer earbuds.

If you are a right audiophile in that you like music – not just the tune but the deep intricacies – you will likely want something a small better. If you are at home, consider using noise canceling circumaural head phones which completely enclose. The ear is surrounded by a comfortable padding and the headphone itself has special wiring to keep exterior sounds out. Although these don’t look very cool when you’re walking around on the street (not to mention that you won’t hear anything but the music with them on), they are perfect if you are trying to make the ultimate home entertainment theatre system (for either music or movies).

If you do want to hear higher quality sound while you’re walking around and listening to your ipod, you may want to consider a headphone called a canalbud. Like an earbud, these go in your ears but they are slightly different. Earbuds usually look like half circles and are essentially speakers that go just on the outer edge of your ear canal. Canalbuds, on the other hand, look more like small tubes and they go inside your ear canal in the same way that ear plugs might go inside your ear canal. The result? More exterior sound is deadened from the outside world and the music you hear has a better sound. The only drawback is that these canalbuds are more expensive than earbuds to they are really for the serious listener only.

Headphones can really make the difference in your music enjoyment. The best kind of headphones are ones that do block out a honest amount of noise from the outside (even if you don’t get noise canceling headphones). The reason is that the volume has to be turned up louder to compensate for exterior noise and the louder the volume, the greater chance of permanent hearing loss. Instead, spending a small extra and finding headphones that do a excellent job of blocking out quite a bit of sound will result in enjoying the music more clearly at lower volumes so your hearing will last.

Delight in your headphones…find ones that suit your needs.

Finding The Right Noise Cancelling Headphones

Reckon all noise cancelling headphones are alike? Reckon there’s basically just one use for head phones? Well, really there are many, many uses for head phones and – more specifically – for noise canceling headphones. The major brand names for this style are Shure, SkullCandy, Etymotic Research, Ultimate Ears, Sennheiser and others.

There are basically a couple different ones to choose from…active and passive.

Active uses electronic circuitry to sense the incoming sounds to lower the amount you hear. These are the type that are over the ears. One of their disadvantages is they require batteries to operate. Passive needs no power and are the type that go in the ears to block outside sounds….earphones, and to a lesser degree the type that come with the Ipod…earbuds.

1. Use these while you’re on the airplane. Listen to music at a low volume and the circuitry in the headphone will reduce any background sound. That way, if you need to have some silent or to get a excellent sleep, this is the ideal way to do it. They make perfect for the business traveler who wants a small silent on a loud airplane (piercing voice?) or wants to get a excellent night sleep in a hotel (why do they always seem to place YOU beside the party room?).

2. Use when you have to listen to training and seminars at work when you want the world to yourself, or the ringing phones or the sound of the fax machine.

3. Use when you want to hear music or watch your favorite movie and you don’t want to subject others to your entertainment while at the same time you don’t want to have to hear other sounds, which will diminish the potential of your entertainment.

4. Use when you want to play video or computer games and you want to truly become a part of the experience. Many sporting events become better when the sound is made to be an integral part of the game. This occurs when you forget that you’re in a busy college dorm or a loud apartment building and you really feel that you are in the race car or the dungeon or the basketball game (or wherever else your game happens to take place.

5. They are also fantastic if you are a passenger in a car on a long trip and have distress sleeping in the car. The head phones will cancel out the road noise, the rustling of the map, the sound of the car radio, etc. and you’ll be able to sleep peacefully.

6. Use when your child is learning to play an instrument. If they are learning an electric instrument, like guitar, bass, or piano, you can give them these headphones so they don’t hear other noises (and so no one else can hear them!). You’ll have a pleased son or daughter with a excellent musical ear and you’ll also have peace and silent in your house!

7. Remember, to make a fantastic gift for everyone and particularly to make a fantastic gift for the individual who has everything, these are ideal. For that hard to buy for person on your list this year, give them a pair of noise cancelling headphones. And if they listen to music you don’t like, you can consider it a gift to yourself, too!
