The crime statistics for Pittsburgh are staggering. The city has a higher rate than the state in nearly all types of crime: murder, burglary, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, arson, car theft, grand larceny, etc. The excellent news is that the citizens of Pittsburgh are not giving up their right to a free and pleased life. Most have just accepted the fact that there is more to watch out for here at home and have become very street smart as they travel around town. As you travel through Pittsburgh, here are some tips to help you stay safe:1. Ditch the headphones. Sure listening to music can make a long walk more enjoyable; especially if you are appreciate some background sound like most Pittsburgh residents. While the music is nice, it takes away one of your senses and—depending on the volume of your music—could drown out the sound of approaching footsteps or car. Another reason to keep the headphones off is that, if you are like most people, music is distracting. It is simple to get caught up in the lyrics of a song or to start singing along in your head and forget to pay attention to your surroundings. Criminals depend on the distracted and are more likely to jump you if you look like you aren’t paying attention. 2. Carry as small as possible with you. Avoid carrying a lot of bags with you when you leave the house. The more bags you have the wealthier you look! The wealthier you look the more likely you are to be targeted for crimes like theft or assault. What’s more, the more bags you carry, the harder it is to keep a hold of all of them. Someone could run by and easily snag one of your bags and run off with it. By the time you gather up the rest of your things the thief will be long gone. To that end, carry your vital things like your wallet/ID and keys in your front pockets. It is harder to pick front pockets than back pockets. 3. Travel in well lit areas of Pittsburgh with lots of escape routes. You want to be able to ditch a threat without having to resort to ducking down a dark alley. Stick to streets that have people walking around and avoid places that look deserted. If something looks dodgy, hail a cab to a safer neighborhood. For that matter, if you have to call someone to come pick you up, have them get you at a location that will allow you to wait inside. People who are standing around outside are more likely to be attacked. It is unlikely that a criminal will follow you into one of Pittsburgh’s shops, restaurants or office buildings. When it comes to staying safe in Pittsburgh there is no such thing as being too paranoid. It is always better to err on the side of caution than it is to walk into a potentially perilous situation and hope that nothing goes incorrect.
