What are Pod Hotels and Can They Save You Money When You Travel?

Pod hotels are not a new phenomenon.  They have been around for many years, but most travelers have never heard of them.  They had their beginnings in Japan as “capsule hotels”, that were, and are still being used mainly by businessmen on stopovers.  But, pod hotels are becoming more and more well loved with vacation travelers as well, because they are convenient and cost less than regular hotels.

The pod hotel concept is only in its infancy in the United States and Europe, but is growing by leaps and bounds as more and more travelers want this unique service.  Entrepreneurs are responding by making  small, pod-like hotel rooms that are normally rented by the hour, or number of hours.

Most pod hotel rooms are small, comfortable, and convenient, and they can have all the amenities of a standard hotel room at a fraction of the cost.  They can be a very excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers and vacationers.

Some pod hotels are situated in airports such as the ones at Yotel.com, located in London, England’s Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.

EasyHotels.com have pod hotels in London, Zurich, Basal, and Budapest.  GBIHotels.com have pod hotels located in Amsterdam and Antwerp.  A New York pod hotel is the PickwickArms.com

There is a new innovation in pod hotels called Metronap Sleep Pods.  These space age looking pods are showing up not only on concourses in airports, but in convenient locations in office buildings.  They are fantastic for tourists and business travelers, as well as tired people and executives that just want to have a small nap.  Even though these sleep pods are located out in the open, they will partially enclose for privacy, but aren’t claustrophobic.  They are also fitted with noise canceling headphones.  They rent by the hour and are reasonably priced.

Air Travel Tips For Making It Easy And Smooth

Observing fellow passengers on my recent flight, I noticed several mistakes and evidence of poor plotting that caused the travelers unnecessary distress.

Traveling by airplane and through airports is stressful enough as it is. Why not do everything you can to make it simple on yourself?

Here are seven simple suggestions of what you can do to make your next flight more comfortable and pleasant.

1. Set your intention. Sounds weird, but it works. Arrive at the airport with the mindset that all is going to go smoothly and that you are going to meet helpful people. Pleasing conditions are much more likely to occur if you expect them than if you are expecting hassles.

2. Wear slip-on shoes. Face it, getting through security these days involves partially undressing in front of a lot of strangers who just want you to rush up and get out of the way. You always have to take off your shoes, so make it simple on yourself by wearing slides.

3. Use a carryon with wheels. Reckon of it as your airport supply kit. Even if you are checking luggage, you still want to have a small wheeled carryon bag, and here’s why: carrying the odds and ends in a bag over your shoulder is tiring and limits your freedom of movement. Instead, a wheeled carryon can act as a sort of cart for any additional items you pick up along the way: food, water, magazines, etc.

4. Bring food. Buy it at the airport if that’s simplest, but be sure to bring healthier choices than offered by the snack boxes you can buy on the airplane — unless you like snacks virtually absent of nutrition and high in stout and carbs.

5. Hydrate. You will feel so much better if you drink plenty of water. The air on the planes is very dry, and since the cabin is a contained, pressurized environment, the air is recycled during the flight. You’re breathing in a lot of crud, and water helps your body deal with it.

6. Wear noise-canceling headphones in flight. What more can I say? Wow. They are really worth the investment if you glide very often at all. Planes are extremely noisy. The powerful engines, the crying babies, the talkative neighbors. All of the grinding and rumbling and whining and blasting become mere background whispers when you’re wearing noise canceling headphones.

7. Bring disposable entertainment. During flight and on layovers, there are a multitude of things you can do to pass the time, ranging from working on your laptop to filling in the newspaper crossword puzzle. But you need a pen to do the puzzle, a plug-in to work on the laptop for long, a credit card to sit in a lounge and watch TV… you get the thought. Reckon ahead about what entertainment you might like to have on hand that is portable and convenient to interrupt during the many phases of your passage from one location to the next. Simplest is a magazine because if you space out and leave it behind, it is readily replaced.

When you have these seven suggestions in place and you keep your overall airport supply kit (the handy wheeled carryon) lightly but thoroughly equipped, your air travel experience becomes more manageable and effortless.

Long Haul Flights: Top Air Travel Tips

Many people absolutely dread long haul flights as they know that they will probalby reach their destination tired, cramped and cranky. This need not be the case but. The purpose of this article is to share some basic travel tips to help you minimise the impact of hours on a plane on your system.

Get to the airport early: Nothing is as stressful as having to race through immigration and security knowing that there is a possibility that you can get offloaded. The stress and agitation from running around the airport can easily turn you into a ball of nerves when (if?) you finally make it onto the plane. Make sure that you avoid situations like this by budgeting more than enough time for your trip to the airport.

Get the best seats possible: Study the configuration of the aircraft you will be travelling on before you travel (there are several websites where you can do this). It may be that there are certain seats with more legroom that you can request when checking in or that you can even reserve online.

Dress comfortably: You are going to have to sit in one position for a long time, the least you can do is to make sure that your clothes and shoes don’t make that harder than it already is. If you need to make a excellent impression on arrival you can stik a change of clothes in your carry on luggage.

Eat and drink in moderation: Sitting still in a confined space is cannot be termed ‘optimum operating conditions’ for your digestive system. The inside of a plane is a highly pressurised environment which means that the effects of alcohol tends to be more severe at cruising altitude. The obvious implication is that you should be very careful about what you eat and drink on a plane.

Avoid dehydration: If you do want to drink: drink water! The inside of a plane is very dry due to the air being re-circulated. You can guard against the effects of this by drinking water at every opportunity.

Walk the aisles: People often find that they are stiff, sore and bloated after long haul flights. This is the case because our muscles reacts negatively to passivity. Even just a few walks down the length of the plane will leave your muscles much more pleased!

Invest in some noise cancelling headphones: I recently bought a excellent pair of noise cancelling headphones and I can’t reckon how I ever flew without them. The technology used does not only enhance the sound quality of whatever you are listening to, but also actively filters out other sounds. The difference that having your own ‘sound bubble’ on long haul flights can make to your state of mind is absolutely phenomenal.

I am not suggesting, with this article, that air travel can be really stress free or that you can arrive ‘fresh as a daisy’ every time you glide. The point that I am trying to make is that, by following these simple steps, you can arrive at your destination with a distinct advantage over those who just sat around hoping that the flight would end soon!

Making Air Travel A Breeze: Part 3 – Enjoying The Ride

So, you’ve made it through security and are ready to get your vacation under way. Unfortunately, you still have a long flight to sit through. Yet, flying doesn’t have to be a miserable experience – even if you are traveling with children. Here are some travel tips to help your whole family delight in your time in the air.

As “airline food” isn’t exactly a mouthwatering phrase, it is a excellent thought to pack some food in your carry-on bag. While it may be hard to pack an entire meal, there are plenty of healthy snacks that can fight your hunger. Start with healthy items like dried fruit and granola. If you are looking for a small more protein, add some jerky to your bag. If you have plenty of healthy options in your bag, you can more easily resist the urge to munch on the less-healthy fare aboard the flight.

Keep in mind that the air inside of airplane cabins is always very dry. As a result, you might experience a thirst that can’t be quenched by the irregular, less than generous drink service. An extra bottle of water or juice in your carry-on bag can go a long ways towards eliminating this discomfort.

If you are one of the many who experience motion sickness, consider taking a pill before boarding the plane. For international flights to the Caribbean or elsewhere, a motion sickness medication may also help you to sleep through much of the flight, allowing you to awake rested and relaxed at your destination.

You have to try your best to relax. Everyone has a different outlet for relaxation, so here is a list of activities to keep your stress at a minimum – whatever your interests may be:

• If you have a laptop computer, you can easily listen to music, watch DVDs or even get some work done. Just make sure you charge your batteries before flying.

• While MP3 players are nice, you don’t need the newest gadget to zone out airplane noise. You can plug noise-canceling headphones into any type of portable music player.

• Books and magazines are fantastic ways to pass the time. If you find the noise irritating, you could even place on noise-canceling headphones without music and eliminate most distractions.

• Simple games like crosswords and sudokus can alleviate stress and exercise your mind.

One of the best tips for air travel with children is to secure seats in the front row of the cabin. In the front row of seats, your family will be granted some extra space and privacy – luxuries that are especially helpful when flying with infants or toddlers. If you have toddlers, you should also find it simpler to let your children play, stretch or wander a small at the front of the aircraft.

When flying with children internationally, most travel professionals recommend non-stop flights. Non-stop flights can be helpful as they allow your children to sleep uninterrupted and prevent potentially stressful hours of flight changes. Additionally, your kids will certainly be pleased to arrive at your vacation destination as soon as possible. But, there are some benefits to taking breaks between flights. For instance, if you are flying to the Caribbean from the northern U.S., your children might become impatient on such a long flight. With a brief layover in a southern city, you can relieve some of your family’s stress from being cooped up for a whole day. A break between flights will also allow you to pick up snacks and drinks, while your children can stretch and walk around freely for a small while.

You should also make sure that you pack all the things your children might need in a carry-on bag. This includes everything from food and medications to extra clothing and a blanket. Older children will probably be entertained by many of the items on the adult list above, but also consider packing items like stuffed animals and art materials. You should try to avoid toys with small parts – such as board games, building blocks and model kits – and your child’s noisier playthings.

If all else fails, just remind your family that you are all en route to a wonderful Caribbean vacation.
